 From his studio in Lamy, New Mexico, artist and metalsmith Steven Lucero transforms steel and iron through the elemental processes of fire, force, and handcraft. Rooted in the centuries-old tradition of the blacksmith, Lucero approaches metal as both a functional material and a medium for artistic expression.

 Working with fire, hammer, and anvil, Lucero shapes each piece by hand, allowing the heat and physicality of the forging process to leave their imprint on the finished work. Fireplace tools, trays, wall sconces and crosses are just a few of the items he enjoys creating. His creations possess a compelling balance of strength and elegance, combining sculptural presence with the practical beauty of objects made to be lived with.

 Lucero’s work reflects a deep respect for traditional craftsmanship while embracing a distinctly contemporary aesthetic. The irregularities of forged metal—the marks of the hammer, subtle variations in surface and form, and the natural almost organic character of the material—are not imperfections but essential elements of each work’s individuality.

 Working in the landscape and artistic community of northern New Mexico, Lucero continues the enduring tradition of the forge while creating works that feel thoroughly at home in contemporary interiors.
